New CCP Recertification

This page is intended to provide guidance for examination candidates on the recertification requirements after achieving certification through the ABCP.

All Certified Clinical Perfusionists (CCPs) must recertify annually. Recertification is designed to ensure that CCPs, through continuing education and clinical activity, continue to meet standards and possess current and adequate knowledge in the field. Recertification consists of two (2) components:

  • Clinical activity [40 activities reported every year]
  • Professional activity [45 CEUs reported every third year]

Clinical Activities

Notification of initial certification generally takes between four to five weeks following the final date of the exam window. After achieving initial certification, depending upon the exam window, some CCPs may be required submit a prorated number of clinical activities (cases) from the date of their initial certification through June 30. For example, a newly certified CCP passing the exams in October and achieving initial certification on October 24 will be able to count cases from October 24 to June 30. This newly certified CCP will only be required to submit 20 total cases. If the CCP cannot supply all 20 cases from Table A, the CCP must submit at least 13 primary cases and no more than 7 cases may be secondary. All CCPs may submit more than the total case requirements. After the initial certification period, CCPs will assume regular reporting requirements of forty (40) cases (July 1 through June 30) in subsequent years.

Please see the table below for a new CCP's first year requirements, based on exam window.

Professional Activities

CCPs must submit their professional activities every third year in addition to their clinical activities. Upon certification, each CCP will be assigned a cycle number (1, 2 or 3) that designates the years in which their professional activities will be due. Professional activities are not prorated for a CCP's first reporting cycle.

The professional activity reporting period for new CCPs certified after the summer, fall or winter exams will be from their date of certification through the end of their assigned reporting cycle (June 30), and every three years thereafter. The professional activity reporting period for new CCPs certified after the spring exams will be from July 1 through the end of their assigned reporting cycle (June 30), and every three years thereafter. New CCPs will find their cycle's due date once they log into the Online Filing System (OFS).

The professional activity reports must contain forty-five (45) CEUs total, including at least fifteen (15) Category I CEUs. Maximum CEUs per activity and reporting cycle, activity descriptions and required documentation may be found in the Summary of Professional Activity.

CEU documentation must be maintained by CCPs. Documentation of activities will be due upon request in the event of an audit.
